Kier is helping students from Prospects College in Southend gain valuable hands-on experience with a host of new work experience placements.
Kier is working with the college to provide opportunities to talented students wanting to get ahead in the trade industry. The first intake of students will join the Kier team at South Essex Homes on 6 March, when 17-year-olds Liam McIver and Liam Confrey will have the opportunity to learn practical skills in a professional environment.
Both students will train in construction maintenance and learn basic construction skills, including bricklaying, plastering, carpentry and health & safety. The trainees are currently on the learning foundation course at Prospects College and will work with Kier for a short introductory period, with the potential to extend their placement if they excel.
Kier delivers repairs and maintenance as well as emergency response services to 6,000 council-owned homes managed by local ALMO South Essex Homes. Its work experience scheme can take up to eight pupils at a time, offering training in trades including carpentry and plumbing, and allows students the opportunity to gain practical skills outside the classroom.
Kier operations director, John Phillips, said: “Kier is committed to providing the very best opportunities to the communities we work in and we are always keen to offer work placements to enthusiastic students who are eager to learn. As a company we understand the importance of valuing trainees and junior staff and encouraging them to pursue careers in the trade industry."
