About Moelven Laminated Timber Structures
Moelven Laminated Timber Structures was established in 1983 in order to expand the sales of laminated timber beams and structures in the UK. We supply both curved and straight glulam beams and structures to the U.K. market. For one-off contracts we provide direct to the supplier a comprehensive service of design, and supply together with associated materials if required. We also supply stock size beams through our stockists, builders' merchants and also direct from Southampton.
The natural alternative to steel and concrete. MOELVEN Glulam is a natural structural material that is economical, strong and good to look at.
It is made by gluing together, under high pressure and heat, laminates of timber that have been accurately planed. The resultant product is strong, stable and corrosion-proof with significant advantages over structural steel and concrete.

The Benefits
Glulam laminated timber is a warm-looking natural product that is the popular alternative to cold concrete and steel.Light Strength for strength, a laminated timber beam is one-sixth of the weight of a reinforced concrete beam and two-thirds the weight of a steel beam. Economical A direct cost comparison shows Moelven laminated timber to be competitive with other structural materials and the lower weight of Moelven Glulam leads to savings on foundations, transport and erection. Easy fixing Timber is well known to be easy to erect and handle. Fixings are easier and less sophisticated than other structural materials. Tailored Moelven Glulam will generally be factory tailored to meet your specification. But for the more straightforward applications, there is a range of members of standard cross section. These are available on short delivery in lengths of 10, 12 and 15 metres. Fire resistant Moelven Glulam has a high resistance to fire and it behaves predictably under fire conditions. In Sweden, where the fire regulations are notoriously strict, Moelven Glulam beams enjoy lower fire insurance premiums than steelwork. Durable Correctly dried timber is very durable - particularly in the large sections typical of Glulam. If extra durability is needed, the members can be supplied treated with preservative. Good looking The natural appearance of Glulam is sufficiently attractive to need no cladding to make it presentable - indeed, used as exposed beams, it adds to the aesthetic appeal of a structure. Versatile Laminated timber can be used for roof and floor beams, columns, and rafters in almost any type of structure. Approved Glue laminated timber - Performance requirements and minimum production requirements meets the requirements of British Standard BS EN 386:2001, BS EN 391:2002 & BS EN 392:1995. 'The Specification for Glued Laminated Timber Structural Members'. The capacity for custom made structural member. Moelven have four main production units. One in Sweden, one in Norway and two in Denmark. Together they produce in excess of 80,000m³ of glulam. Fast delivery The Moelven range of standard stock section sizes are all available 'off the shelf' from stockists in the UK. Energy-conserving Since wood is a renewable resource, Moelven Glulam is an ecologically attractive alternative to steel and concrete; furthermore, it takes ten times more energy to make a steel beam, for example, than to make an equivalent laminated timber beam. |
