About London Stone Conservation Ltd
London Stone Conservation is a company of master craftspeople.
We provide the following specialist services:
The craftspeople of London stone conservation are trained in the production, installation and use of stone for a diverse range of architectural applications.
We specialise in both the reproduction of elements for the replacement of carving for conservation purposes and the manufacture of new pieces for contemporary architectural projects.
Our commitment to stone and its architectures:
The City of London Corporation asked LSC to carefully undertake monument restoration and conservation to over 60 monuments across the site. As Bunhill Fields is a designated grade II listed site located in a conservation area, our heritage skills were called upon to deliver this work. We have also carried out restoration works on several war memorials over the years.
Stonework
Our carvers are trained in drawing, clay and wax modeling to create preparatory studies if requested. Casting and mould-making are also available.
Masonry
Works of designing, preparing and installing new stone:
Carving and conservation are, by their nature, cross/intra-disciplinary. Our various trainings and professional backgrounds reflect this, as does the quality of our work.
Lettering
For memorials, signs, entablatures and architectural/landscape interventions. The art and skill in the cutting of stone letters make a strenuous discipline. The v-cut especially challenges, both in its production and visual temporality as the light changes with the sun’s course. Our letter carvers possess the highest training in both letterform and technical execution – a merciless eye for the spaces in between.
All lettering is hand-drawn and then hand-carved with a hammer and chisel. Sand-blasting may be faster and cheaper, but it simply cannot compete in either good spacing or good v-cut.
Conservation Centred
As carvers, masons and conservators of stone, we bring together historical and theoretical sensitivities with practical know-how; innovative technology with the finest of traditional practice. We constantly monitor the academic, scientific and practical discourses in the conservation field.
Conservation Consultancy
