About O'Brien Aggregate Marsden Ltd
Marsden Quarry has been at the centre of the local working community in Sunderland for over 150 years. The Sunderland-based O’Brien family have recently become custodians of the quarry and are committed to it’s pre-existing restoration scheme as well as seeing it’s continued contribution to the local economy and the important provision of local employment.
O’Brien Values
For the past 40 years the O’Brien family has been at the centre of the waste, recycling and construction industries in the North East. The success of their various businesses has been down to their customer-first approach and a can-do attitude. The same approach will be at the centre of the Marsden Quarry operation. We look forward to working with you.
Professional Approach
We pride ourselves on our professional approach. We are a customer service driven business and work closely with you whatever your requirement for aggregates or inert waste landfill.
Quality Materials
Our on-site materials laboratory tests our products to ensure compliance with relevant European Standards such as BS EN 13242 (Aggregates for Unbound Use) and also the Specification for Highway Works (SHW).
Working in Partnership
We’ve learned over the years how to develop long-term relationships with our partners. Give us a call to discuss how we can work more closely with your business.
Aggregates
O’Brien Aggregate Marsden are a leading supplier of construction aggregates and agricultural limestone from our quarry on the north east coast located near Whitburn, just to the north of Sunderland. Marsden Quarry has been serving the local region in excess of one hundred years, since around the turn of the 20th century.
The quarry provides a range of primary and recycled construction aggregates that supply markets throughout the North East of England including Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and Co Durham. O’Brien Aggregate Marsden customers include local authorities, civil engineering and construction industry as well as demolition contractors. We work in partnership with each customer to provide expertise, first class service and logistics solutions.
Primary Aggregates
Marsden Quarry provides limestone aggregates to the construction industry in the north-east of England. The quarry can process a range of specific materials depending on end-use requirements – these include granular sub-bases for road and pavement construction, single-size aggregates for drainage and pipe-bedding and also general fills and crusher runs used in various site applications.
A proportion of the inert waste material brought into Marsden Quarry for restoration is capable of being recycled to create recycled aggregate for use in the construction industry. Materials are set aside in a dedicated area where it is then processed. Our recycled aggregates comply with the requirements of the WRAP Quality Protocol.
Recycling of aggregates permits a more diverse and economical use of the quarry, in addition to supplying alternative products for customers. Government and EU policy is to encourage the greatest possible use of recyclable materials as alternatives to primary aggregates, the aims of which our company supports. The above information is for guidance purposes only and does not seek to advise any specific end use due to the varying requirements for individual contracts.
Marsden Quarry distribute agricultural limestone throughout the UK and export into the northern European agricultural industry. Marsden Quarry produces two types of agricultural limestone as defined by the Fertiliser Regulations 1991:
Inert Waste Disposal
Marsden Quarry operates a permitted inert waste landfill site as part of the long term Quarry Restoration Scheme approved by South Tyneside Council Mineral Planning Authority, in December 2004.
Inert materials recycled from construction projects across the region are used to refill our quarry and reform the landscape in accordance with the approved contours and landform of the restoration scheme.
