About Wayne Ricketts Stained Glass
Established in 1993 in the UK, I produce custom stained glass windows and leaded lights of the highest quality.
I have been working with glass as a stained glass artist for more than 25 years and, with my small team of dedicated professionals, we cover all aspects of stained glass and leaded light work. We design and fabricate custom stained glass and install new commissions in contemporary or traditional style; and offer repair and restoration of leaded lights and stained glass to a very high standard with a sensitive approach to the historical significance of the glass and its setting; we have had extensive experience of working on listed and UK conservation area buildings.
Whatever the project, I always approach it with a care and empathy for the needs of the customer and the integrity of the building and space in which the work will sit. The level of craftsmanship and the quality of the work produced is always of paramount importance to me.
Traditional
A key part of our business is the production of traditional stained glass and leaded lights. With the 1960s and 1970s vogue for ‘modernising’ properties and the tendency by some to replace damaged leaded glass with plain glazing, to save money, many period properties have lost their original stained glass and leaded lights and, subsequently, some of their character.
We also have a large selection of period glass that we have collected, inherited or salvaged, over the years, to give even greater authenticity and harmony to our traditional-style new lights and to make perfect, undetectable repairs to existing leaded lights.
Contemporary
Whether it be figurative, geometric or abstract we can design and supply contemporary stained glass tailored to the needs and tastes of the individual. With a background in art and design I particularly relish the opportunity to push the boundaries of the medium, exploring the interaction of light, colour, line. shape and texture, to create exciting, unique works of stained glass art.
With a variety of techniques at our disposal: painting, staining, acid-etching, leading, fusing etc. the possibilities are virtually as limitless as the imagination and, as always, the work is carried out to a very high standard and with great care over its suitability to the location.
Ecclesiastical
We cover all aspects of ecclesiastical stained glass, from the design, supplying and fitting of new stained glass windows to the smallest in situ repair. The creation of a new ecclesiastical window is always a great honour and a fascinating challenge. Working closely with the donors and the church officials we can create a design that not only fits its purpose but adds to the beauty of its surroundings.
We can carry out full restoration of damaged stained glass windows, where necessary, removing the stained glass carefully from the stonework, securely boarding up and taking the glass back to the studio for refurbishment.
Repair/Restore
An important facet of the stained glass studios work concerns the upkeep of our stained glass heritage; whether it be the in situ replacement of individual pieces of a damaged window, the removal and complete restoration of part or all of a window, or the conservation of the fabric of a stained glass window (the lead camb and the glass) in its entirety.
Kiln Work
In addition to our stained glass work we also produce fused and kiln-cast glass, either as stand alone pieces or for incorporating into stained glass windows and leaded lights.
Deeply textured kiln-cast glass has the ability to capture and hold light and is very effective in small windows, whilst fused glass allows a freedom of the use of colour in smaller details that would be difficult to achieve in conventional stained glass techniques.
Schools/Educational
It is always a great pleasure to pass on my love and enthusiasm for the art of stained glass and I am happy to give talks, demonstrations and lectures on all aspects of the craft and its history. Whether this be a hands on demonstration of the various techniques or an illustrated lecture, I can tailor the seminar to the audience requirements. I have given talks to various groups, such as townswomen’s guilds and the WI as well as practical demonstrations in schools.
