Based in Stockton-on-Tees in the Tees Valley and covering North Yorkshire, Tees Valley, Durham and beyond, award winning Matthew TROTTER & MILLER, Chartered Architects, specialise in turning your building ideas into reality.
About Us
The Practice has its foundations in the private architectural practice of Matthew Trotter, who started work in the early 1950’s in Stockton-on-Tees. Robin Miller joined Matt Trotter in partnership in September 1960 and the Practice became known by its present style of “Matthew TROTTER & MILLER”.
Matt Trotter retired from the Practice in August 1969 and Robin Miller continued as Sole Principal until 1972 when he took into partnership Roger Hansom, who in turn retired from the partnership in 1982. In 1986 Tony Richardson, who had been an employee with the firm since 1976, joined Robin Miller as a Partner.
Experience
The Practice is broad-based, tackling a wide variety of projects from simple house extensions to large scale multiple housing schemes for both private developers and social landlords as well as a variety of commercial, industrial, retail and health care projects, some typical examples of which are illustrated in the "Buildings" sections of the Site.
The Practice has a wide and varied private and public client base and has built up considerable expertise in the fields of Community Health Care, Public/Private Housing and small to medium Commercial/Office Developments.
What We Do
The Practice aims to provide an efficient service to Clients. We endeavour to work closely with Clients to turn their ideas into reality.
All of our buildings are designed in close collaboration with the Client to provide buildings which are economic to build and operate and which provides a pleasant working or living environment which fully satisfies the brief and is aesthetically pleasing.
The Practice has for many years had a policy of energy conservation and designing for low maintenance and low running costs wherever possible.
Well before the advent of recent Health and Safety Legislation, the Practice has striven to achieve designs which are both safe to construct and to maintain. We have taken on board the latest requirements for Health and Safety on building sites and for buildings, which are embodied in the CDM Regulations 2007and subsequent amendments.
The Practice has links to several local qualified Health & Safety Consultants who can provide CDM Co-ordinator services to Clients, as required by current CDM Regulations. We can assist non-domestic Clients to fulfill their duties under the Regulations.

- Private House Extensions at Elton, Stockton; Middridge, Newton Aycliffe; Hutton Village and Pinchinthorpe nr. Guisborough; Eaglescliffe, Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough and Wynyard. The recently completed conversion of 20/21 The Green, Seaton Carew from two properties to a single house within the Seaton Carew Conservation Area won the 'Conservation' category in the 2013 Hartlepool Civic Society awards.
