Liscannor Stone Company Limited

Liscannor's famous stone is still finding its way to all corners of the world, many years after there was a thriving quarrying industry in the area employing 500 men in at least nine quarries in the area.

The quarries were so prosperous in the early 1900s that a village was built around the famous Doonagore mines, which also put Liscannor port on the map. It was one of the busiest of the small ports along the west coast of Ireland with its shipments of stone to London and Liverpool. However, the advent of World War I put an end to all the prosperity, and when the boats were unable to travel, the mines closed.

However, a number of mines were re-opened on a smaller scale in the Liscannor area in the 1960s and are still producing the famous stone.



Building Stones
There are several types of building stones that can be used. Displayed in the photos are some beautifully finished homes using the following stones:

• Limestone
• Light Grey Sandstone
• Moher Stone

Limestone is a darker stone than the Light Grey Sandstone, which is quite small pieces and a lighter colour. The Moher Stone is a similar shade to Light Grey Sandstone but it is smoother.

All three stones are beautiful and natural to the region.

Flagstones
The Moher flagstone is characterised by the fossil tracks of a marine worm that traversed the sediments, which formed the rock 350 million years ago.

Typical blue black in colour with some varieties of reddish hues, it has a textured surface with high non-slip properties. A high-silica stone, it is very hard and has superb mechanical and weathering properties. The material is ideal for both indoor and outdoor paving.
