Types of Units Explained
The term ‘Portable Building’ generally refers to a single standalone unit of any size within the following descriptions and can be in any format, from open plan to several rooms, and can also include toilets, showers and kitchens. They can also be referred to as prefabricated buildings or "Prefab".

Jackleg Cabin
A unit which has 4 adjustable legs with 2 located on each side. These ‘jacklegs’ not only aid the levelling of the unit on site but are also used for lifting on and off the delivery vehicle, which is known as a ‘Hiab lorry’ ( a lorry with its own crane ). The adjustments of the ‘jacklegs’ generally goes from ground level to full height of the unit, the latter is not advised as the unit becomes more unstable at height.

Flat pack units
New and bespoke flat pack portable buildings are manufactured to the same high standard as factory assembled, with the exception of jacklegs as these are not required. The panels are delivered to site and assembled in situ. This option is used when access to site is restricted, as the panels are manufactured to be man handled eliminating the need for cranes, and also if multiple units are required haulage can be reduced.

Anti-Vandal Units
A unit of all steel construction including the roof which offers better protection against vandalism. They are fitted with steel doors that incorporate a 5 lever security locking mechanism, and steel shutters to the windows, generally of the ‘butterfly’ type (2 shutters hinged to side) with internal locking bolts, but also available as sliding units which are sometimes operated internally with bolts through the external wall of the unit.

Modular
The term ‘modular building’ refers to multiple bays joined together. Modular units are several modular bays assembled together on site. They are available in a range of sizes from 20’ (6 metres) upwards to a general maximum size of 40’ (12 metres). A modular unit is from 2 bays upwards assembled side to side giving the advantage of a single large area but can also be partitioned to any configuration if required. They can also be joined end to end and can be two storeys high with an internal staircase.

Steel stores
Storage units are of steel construction with no windows. Storage units are available as stores or shipping containers both of which have full width double doors to end of unit which is generally 8’ (2.4 metres). Steel stores are available with jacklegs and have integral locking to doors and range in size from 12’ (3.6 metres) to 24’ (7.2 metres) in 4’ (1.2 metre) increments. Shipping containers have locking bars to doors requiring a padlock and are available as standard in 20’ and 40’ x 8’ wide.
