We first used DCM on a project that required a large wet pour area with quite complex graphics. The outcome was stunning and as a result our customer was delighted. Since then we have used them on numerous schemes, including our biggest area to date, and every time we’ve been impressed by the quality of work, the attention to detail and the professionalism of their installation teams. We found Tahira and her sales team a delight to deal with and always get our quote requests returned promptly and competitively. From our experience of dealing with them, we would always recommend DCM to any potential customers.

Their particular expertise is in the graphics, (which I always like to include), and have been increasing the difficulty of the designs which they always recreate perfectly no matter how complex I make them!

The Difference Between Resin Bonded and Resin Bound Surfacing

At DCM Surfaces we receive a large volume of requests from people who want to know the differences between resin bonded gravel surfacing and resin bound gravel surfacing. Although they sound the same it is important to note that they remain as two different surfacing types which we will now explain to you.
3-boundweb

What is Resin Bound Surfacing?

A popular choice for many resin bound surfacing provides a water-permeable (porous) surface when laid onto a suitable surface. This means that water will pass through the surface back into the ground which makes it ideal for driveways, paths, tree pits and any areas which normally would be prone to flooding or standing water.

Sometimes resin bound gravel surfaces are referred to as “trowelled surfacing” or “trowelled paving” within the industry.

Gravel or aggregates, which are available in a full range of colours and styles, are mixed with resin using a force-action mix process. When resin bound gravel is laid it is a cold pour mixture which is poured onto a suitable surface and then smoothed out using a trowel. When this is set there are no loose stones and it is features a smooth surface finish when professionally installed.

What is Resin Bonded Surfacing?

Again this is another popular choice for many people although resin bonded surfacing are non-permeable which means that water will not filter through its surface.

This surface must be laid directly onto a non-porous fine wearing course tarmac or concrete base and with resin bonded gravel surfaces it is important that proper drainage is installed in order to prevent flooding.
4-bondedweb

Sometimes resin bonded gravel surfaces are referred to as “scattercoat surfacing” or “scattercoat paving” within the industry.

Gravel or aggregates which are available in a range of colours and styles are scattered onto resin which has been laid onto a non-porous fine wearing tarmac or concrete base. It is a great low-cost option for giving a surface a new lease of life; although it is important to note that the bonded aggregate particles could loosen over time. Also this surface is not very easy to clean although when professionally installed as mentioned it can transform a space instantly.

Whether it is resin bonded gravel or resin bound gravel surfacing you’re looking for then make sure you contact a professional surfacing company who can offer you the best advice on which to choose as well as offering experience within design and colour options.

Why not speak to a member of our friendly team at DCM Surfaces today and ask us about our resin bound and resin bonded surfaces.

Nationwide bound gravel surfacing

Resin Bound Gravel is an excellent choice when it comes to decorative gravel surfacing with a natural appearance and an additional 'wow factor'

Bound gravel combines aggregate (gravel) and resin which is then trowelled and levelled onto a suitable sub base such a asphalt. The finished surface is porous, or water permeable, meaning water drains through the layers reducing standing water or drainage concerns making resin bound gravel ideal for driveways, courtyards, commercial premises, pathways and car parks.

The use of resin to bind the gravel together means the surface is not prone to migration so does not require sweeping or resettling to maintain it appearance. Also resin bound gravel doesn't displace under vehicle tyres and is therefor suitable for light / moderate traffic.

Bound gravel is a popular choice with architects and developers due to the range of colours and colour matching options available. Mixing coloured stone together can either create contrast with existing features or be used to blend with specific masonry or buildings as desired by the client.

Bound by the River

The City of London provides many stunning backdrops and skylines. DCM surfaces are lucky to carry out many of our installations; wet pour playgrounds, rubber mulch, and decorative gravel surfacing in the City.

One recent project specified DCM Surfaces Resin Bound Gravel for a series of paths and walkways in the grounds of a school over looking the River Thames.

Wet pour themes from DCM Surfaces

DCM Surfaces Wet Pour is available in a variety of colours ranging from reds, blues, green, purple, yellow, black and mixed colours. It can be laid as a single colour or can be designed to create a themed play area.

Popular themes include; aquatic and beaches – using blue and yellow to create a beach effect. Additional graphics in the shape of dolphins, whales, octopus an other sea creatures are very popular on this theme. Other themes include space & stars and abstract shapes.

A popular theme for schools and nurseries is lettering and numbers. Research has found that using lettering and numbers in a playground scenario boost learning amongst children during play.

There are many possibilities for lettering and number themes. Common installations include number hopscotch and other numbered play games moving from one number to another.

Letters can be used in a similar way and is very effective, visually and educationally, in the form of an alphabet.

Below is a recent installation at primary school based in Wiltshire. The school were keen to transform a long narrow play area into an outdoor educational zone.

Using a base of green wet pour graphics were incorporated using brown rubber wet pour. The school chose to have letters representing the alphabet from A – Z as well as numbers from 1 - 20. The numbers and letters were designed in a weaving pattern covering the length of the play area in between wooden support structures. The colours used complemented the artificial grass and other wooden features within the playground.

Maintaining safety surfaces through the winter!

If you believe the weather forecasters we’re in for a long winter, and for some hopefully lots of snow and ice!

At DCM Surfaces we care about our surfaces long after we have installed them and that means giving advice on upkeep during all seasons particularly during inclement weather conditions.

Sledges, sleighs and snowmen!

It might be time to dust off the toboggan, make sure its ready for the slopes and get your gloves prepared for building a snowman! The snow can certainly entertain little ones for hours, but when its getting icy underfoot you don’t want to be worrying about slips and trips!

DCM’s Absorb-a-Fall™ wet pour surface excels in icy conditions. We only use premium raw materials which means during icy conditions the surface maintains it integrity and safety measures.

Of course DCM would always recommend caution using playground equipment during icy, or wintery conditions but we’re confident that where Absorb-a-Fall wet pour has been installed by us it will be safe underfoot.

Grits and salts

Getting prepared for winter is essential and there are lots of products widely available to cater for making walking and travelling easier. Many DIY stockists will have ready mixed salts and grits ideal for distributing on paths, driveways, gardens and walkways that can help prevent slips and falls.

Our advice when using grits and salts is to always follow the instructions on the product you intend to use. But it is equally important to regularly brush away excess materials and replace the grits routinely. You should only use small amounts of slats at a time and we highly recommend testing in one small area before spreading.

For more advice

If you have a DCM Surface installed, or indeed any kind of surface and you would like some further advice on maintenance during the winter give us a call on 01772 440340, we’d be happy to help!
