About P S Applications
Structural Fire Protection
Passive fire protection is designed to prevent the passage of smoke and flames passing freely through a building. Also it is designed to maintain the integrity of a building preventing it’s breakdown or collapse in a fire situation. There are various ways in which this can be achieved:
Fire Barriers
To prevent the passage of smoke and flames, fire barriers are installed particularly around escape passages and fire fighting lobby’s. They can be cut and fit around services which penetrate fire resisting elements of structure and consist of materials such as mineral wool made from volcanic rock, which resist, not only the passage of smoke and flames but also offer thermal insulation preventing the transfer of heat from one area to another. These products are tested to BS 476 parts 20-24.
Fire board, cementitious & mineral fibre sprayed systems, intumescent paint
Steel structures will distort and may collapse in a fire. To prevent the collapse of steel structures in a fire they are protected either by, fire board encasement, cementitious or mineral fibre sprayed systems or intumescent paint. These systems are designed to prevent the temperature of the steel reaching it’s critical state (550 – 600 degrees C). These products are tested to BS 476 part 21.
Flame Retardant Finishes
Application of flame retardant finishes to common areas of a building to prevent the spread of flame and smoke. These coatings are tested to BS 476 parts 6 and 7, are self extinguishing and will not support the spread of flame.
What We Do
Intumescent Coatings
Intumescent coatings are used to maintain the stability and integrity of structural steel work for up to 2 hours. They are by airless spray in thicknesses of between 400 and 8000 microns depending on the degree of protection required, the size and weight of section and the portion of section exposed to fire (referred to as the Hp/a).
Flame Retardant Coatings
Under the influence of heat the intumescent coating expands by up to 50 times to produce a charred insulating layer. Intumescent coatings are also used to improve the flame retardant qualities of combustible materials e.g. timber.
Fire Stopping
It is obvious that services passing through unsealed openings in fire resisting elements of structure will also allow flames, smoke and hot gases to pass through creating an unnecessary hazard. We are able to supply and install a selection of products designed to seal these gaps, providing an effective fire resistance of up to 4 hours. The type of product used would depend upon the special needs on site.
Compound & Coated Panel Systems
Mortar systems are used where mechanical strength is required such as service penetrations in floors which may be required to accept foot traffic or around fire dampers which require rigid support.
They are also ideal for sealing odd shaped or poorly accessible spaces in horizontal penetrations because the mortar will flow around the services completely filling the void. Mortars are available in densities typically between 800kg/m3 to 2000kg/m3.
Acoustic Barriers
We are often called upon to provide barriers within ceiling voids and under floors to prevent sensitive conversations being overheard or nuisance sound disturbing meetings etc. There are a number of materials that can be employed depending on the level of privacy required. Most situations can be improved with medium to high density mineral wool products. These products are usually foil faced so that an effective seal can be achieved and to prevent the migration of particles in a return air plenum situation.
Industrial Coatings
We also supply and apply a wide range of industrial coatings. Hard wearing and anti-slip floor coatings for car parks, warehousing etc, sterile coatings for hospitals, factories, food preparation areas and other specialised surface treatments.

Quality Assurance Statement
We at P S Applications Ltd have always strived to achieve the best quality of work for our clients. To this end we have put in place certain procedures to ensure that when a contract is completed our client can have every confidence that it is done correctly and will perform its function in a fire emergency.

What We Do
- Fire Protection Installations
P S Applications are specialists in the field of structural fire protection. We supply and apply intumescent paint to structural steel work, fire stop around services passing through fire resisting elements of structure with coated panel and compound systems all to maintain the fire integrity of a building in a accordance with the various parts of BS 476 and Approved Document B of the building regulations. - Acoustic barriers
We also supply and install acoustic barriers and apply industrial coatings to various surfaces forming various functions, spread of flame, sterile, decorative etc. - Fire Protection inspections
We can also be part of a maintenance regime by inspecting buildings and premises for adequate structural Fire Protection.
