About Faircough & Co Ltd

Buying a home is one of the most important and expensive financial decisions you will make.

With over three decades of experience, I’ve specialized in crafting comprehensive Structural Engineers Reports for residential and commercial properties. Throughout my career, I’ve meticulously inspected and reported on a wide spectrum of structures – from expansive industrial complexes to the cosiest cottages – spanning ages ranging from half a millennium to just a few months. Many times, what may initially appear to be concerning issues often prove to be much more manageable and cost-effective to address. Allow me to assist you in dispelling any apprehensions and facilitating a seamless property purchase. When more substantial concerns arise, I’ll provide a clear diagnosis and recommend effective solutions to rectify the situation. Your satisfaction and confidence are my top priorities.

About Me
After completing my Civil Engineering degree at Bolton University, I embarked on my career journey. My initial role was with a small consulting engineering firm located in the former fire station across from Piccadilly Train Station. Working closely with a senior structural engineer, I focused on designing structures for commercial and educational buildings, using materials like brickwork, structural steelwork, timber, concrete, and pre-cast concrete.

Later, I transitioned to a Process Plant Contractor based in Sale. I engaged in structural design projects for coal processing plants in the UK, collaborating with the National Coal Board and cement works in the UK and the Middle East. Most of my designs featured structural steelwork, and the Middle Eastern projects were earthquake-resistant designs. It was during this period that I began conducting Structural Engineers’ Reports. My responsibilities included inspecting and assessing potential defects within coal processing plants in the North East, along with storage silos in stone quarries in North Wales.

Subsequently, I joined Building Design Partnership, contributing to their Manchester offices on St. Johns Street and Quay Street. During this period, I undertook structural design tasks for office and laboratory buildings in Alderley Edge, serving ICI Pharmaceuticals. I also designed the Refuge Insurance Headquarters Building in Wilmslow and conducted a Structural Engineers Report for a segment of the Stanlow Oil Refinery on behalf of Shell Oil UK. This pivotal phase was marked by my successful attainment of professional qualifications, achieving Chartered status as a Structural Engineer (MIStructE) and a Civil Engineer (MICE).

Later in my career, I was associated with a consulting firm of structural engineers in Cheadle Hulme. Here, I ventured into conducting Structural engineer reports for residential properties.

SERVICES
Structural Engineers Reports
I might suggest additional assessments in a few cases following my visual report. These assessments might include:
  • Trial Holes and Mini-Boreholes
  • Drainage Investigations
  • Intrusive investigations involve removing plaster, lifting floorboards, and opening the brickwork.
These would require the homeowner’s approval and a builder’s involvement to complete the work and handle repairs afterwards.

These additional assessments can be expensive and are often covered by the homeowner or insurance company.

Typically, these extra assessments are not necessary. In most situations, I might only recommend a Drainage Report, Timber and damp Report, or a Cavity Wall Tie Report. These are often suggested in your Mortgage Report or Homebuyers Report.

DEFECTS
As with anything in life, nothing last forever and this applies to buildings as well. You will often find that buildings and important structural beams and pillars move or change. This can often cause structural defects in the building that if left, can cause major structural damage leaving the building uninhabitable.
