Sisk's Major Projects division has been tasked with the 13 month project to construct the substructure and reinforced concrete work for the five turbine halls together with the associated cooling water pipework and ancillary site services.
Work has commenced on site and is part of £1bn invested in the project, owned and commissioned by RWE npower, ultimately producing 2,000MW and supplying around three million homes.
Alstom chose Sisk's Major Projects team for their innovative and coherent solution to the civil engineering work. This award follows on from the relationship developed between Alstom and Sisk on a power station project in Aghada, Ireland.
Community engagement remains of paramount importance to both Alstom and RWE npower, with Sisk submitting detailed plans to minimise disruption to the area and to work closely with RWE npower’s Local Liaison Committee (LLC) to promote local employment opportunities and keep local communities regularly informed of the work schedule.
The power plant is being built on the site of the former oil-fired Pembroke Power Station that ceased operation in 1997, finally being demolished between 2000 and 2003.
The original planning application was submitted by RWE npower in 2005 and with Section 36 consent granted for construction to start in 2009.
Nigel Warnes, Director Major Projects, Sisk commented: "This is a significant project, and it is fantastic for Sisk to be a part. We have undertaken some very complex civil engineering projects across Europe including power, pharmaceutical and major infrastructure; this experience and specialist expertise will underpin the successful delivery of the Pembroke Power Station."
The project is due for completion in September 2010.
