A school in east Manchester which has taken its design inspiration from pupils is now being built by a number of local people.
Park View Community School in Miles Platting, is set to open in September 2010 replacing the former Park View Primary School.
There are currently 32 bricklayers, builders, electricians and engineers on site, and this number will rise to 74 at the peak of the build. 25% of the workers are from Miles Platting, with a number making the short journey from home to work in a matter of minutes.
Nineteen year-old bricklayer Jahmai Purcell is one worker who lives close to the site and is helping to build the school as part of his three year apprenticeship.
He said: "It is great to be part of building this school that will benefit the community and I am proud to be working in my local area, only a few minutes from my own house. I am really enjoying getting up and going to work in the morning!"
Manchester City Council, appointed construction firm Bramall Construction through its Framework One Strategic Partnership to build the two storey building on the corner of Holland Street and Varley Street. The new 2,560 sq metres school will accommodate 420 children and a 60-place nursery.
Schools facilities will be available for community use including landscaped areas, a sports hall, an all weather football pitch, a Sport England standard games area and classrooms for life-long learning.
