Work has started work on a new special educational needs primary school in Gainsborough for 96 pupils aged between 2 and 11.
Kier Northern began the contract as a turf cutting ceremony marked the start of work on site for the new Warren Wood Community School at Middlefield Lane, Gainsborough on Monday 19 October.
Executive Councillor for Children's Services, Patricia Bradwell, said: "This will be a tremendous addition to our special needs provision and give local children and the community a superb school facility. We have consulted with children, parents and local residents to ensure the school is of an excellent standard and will be of real benefit to the community. The school will also be built very much with the environment in mind following good practice guidelines for lighting, insulation, heating and ventilation."
The new facilities will include twelve classrooms, specialist teaching areas including music and drama, hall, dining room and kitchen, library and IT suite, therapy spaces and offices.
Executive Principal of the Gainsborough Federation, Karen Gittins, commented: "With the contractors Kier Northern moving on site to begin laying the foundations for the new school, our pupils are particularly excited about being able to watch the building take shape before their eyes! Although the new school initially opened in the existing school buildings, staff and pupils look forward to moving into their new building within the next twelve months or so. It will provide excellent facilities to dramatically improve the learning environment for our young people."
