Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group operating in construction services, professional services, support services and infrastructure investments, has announced that Gammon Construction, the market-leading infrastructure contractor in Hong Kong, in which Balfour Beatty has a 50% shareholding, has been awarded two new contracts valued at HK $2.27 billion (£180 million).
These contracts are for the redevelopment of the Victoria Park swimming pool complex by the Architectural Service Department of the Hong Kong Government, valued at HK$930 million (£74 million), along with a HK$1.34 billion (£106 million) contract to construct Kennedy Town Station and overrun tunnels for MTR Corporation.
The Victoria Park site, located in Causeway Bay, occupies approximately 24,000 square metres. The 55-month redevelopment contract comprises a 50 x 25 metre indoor heated main pool to the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) standard, a multi-purpose pool and other leisure facilities including a handball court and two skating rinks.
Sustainability is a priority for the Victoria Park project. Gammon will utilise intelligent building materials, harness natural energy, reuse waste and use recycled materials to deliver the project for its customer.
The Kennedy Town Station and overrun tunnels contract for MTR Corporation forms part of the West Island Line, delivering a new railway link to the Western district, which is one of the few remaining urban areas in Hong Kong that does not have a railway.
The West Island Line will rejuvenate the area and create significant new employment opportunities as new businesses will be established to take advantage of the improved transport links.
Gammon, in partnership with its customer, MTR Corporation, is aiming to offer levels of noise and dust suppression never before achieved in Hong Kong.
