The announcement comes just months after a highly successful public consultation in the area, which revealed that 87% of residents in Poynton were in favour of their village centre being revitalised.
Cheshire East Council Leader, Wesley Fitzgerald, said: "The village centre improvement scheme will be based on the principles of shared space; where the car and the pedestrian share the same space. Understandably, residents are worried about safety but research indicates the proposals will produce a safer environment than the current situation.
"As a result, construction work on Park Lane has been re-scheduled to start in the summer. This has the advantage of coinciding with the start of the school holidays, normally a quieter period for traders. Fountain Place is set to follow in due course."
Proposals for the Poynton Scheme include:
- The creation of a new environment to change driver and pedestrian behaviour
- Courtesy crossings for pedestrians
- Kerbs to be retained with a reduced height of 30mm
- Introduction of a no-parking zone with deliveries only permitted during designated periods
- Gateways included at each point where the normal carriageway meets the new shared space area
