Major Regeneration Scheme About To Begin

The new ASDA supermarket development on Newark's Potterdyke car park in Nottinghamshire has moved a step closer with news of temporary arrangements to be put in place when the bus station closes at the end of May.

During construction works temporary arrangements will be made to relocate the bus stops on-street at Castlegate, Lombard Street and the Town Wharf.

Newark and Sherwood District Council granted permission in November 2008 for a new 5,715 sq metre ASDA store, along with the new bus facility, doctors' surgery, health centre, retail units, housing and 411 car parking spaces, on the current site. ASDA is aiming to open its new store by Christmas 2011, with the new bus station opening at the same time.

Newark and Sherwood District Council’s cabinet member for sustainable development and regeneration, Cllr Roger Blaney, said: "Regrettably, these temporary arrangements are likely to lead to some disruption to businesses, motorists and bus passengers. However, this activity shows the project is gathering pace and once complete will provide the people of Newark with a new ASDA supermarket as well as replacement car parking facilities, a new bus station, doctors’ surgery, a health centre building and modern shop units."

In spring of this year, a new health centre will be constructed on Portland Street as part of the scheme and will house services currently located in the Newark Health Clinic. Services which will move to the new health centre include dentistry, physiotherapy, speechand language therapy and district nursing.

The new ASDA store will be the retail anchor of the Potterdyke redevelopment. The store will have a 32,500 sq ft sales area which will include the full ASDA food range and non-food goods including George clothing. The store will create more than 300 full and part-time jobs for local people.
