Council Celebrates Construction Of 100th New Council Home
Bristol City Council marks a milestone this month when it is presented with the 100th new home built as part of the prefab redevelopment project.
The project has seen the council join forces with the private developer Bovis Homes to provide 330 new council bungalows and houses across 15 former prefab sites in Bristol.
These are being built to replace 330 pre-fabricated homes put up in the wartime with a life expectancy of 10 years.
The project began in 2003 following the decision to demolish and re-develop the homes which do not meet the Government’s Decent Homes Standard.
Councillor Mark Wright, Cabinet Member for Housing and Service Improvement, said: "The handover of the 100th home created through the prefab redevelopment project is a real milestone and a great day for the city.
"Addressing the legacy of housing put up as a short-term measure many years ago has been a real challenge given the lack of capital funding.
"However, through a combination of hard work and an innovative partnership approach, we have succeeded in finding a solution to replacing these homes with a mixture of new houses, bungalows and flats fit for purpose. The partnership with Bovis Homes also means that a further 768 private and social homes (managed by a Registered Social Landlord), are also being built."
This is also good news in the current economic climate, where house building has been on the downturn and show a high commitment to delivering this proejcet for the good of the city and its residents.
To date the project has completed four sites, (two in Ashton Vale, one in Hengrove and one in Shirehampton). The project is currently building homes in Aston Vale, Speedwell, St George, Brislington and Horfield. Most importantly despite the upheaval of moving there has been extremely positive feedback from the Prefab tenants who have moved into their new bungalows.
Of the original 330 prefab tenants there are now only 6 still to move. Most of them have either been moved into alternative accommodation or into new bungalows which have been built as part of the re-development project.
