Two Leicester schools which have stood separately for over 100 years are being united in a major refurbishment project.
The buildings housing Humberstone Infants and Junior Schools will soon be linked together as a £2.7 million scheme by Leicester City Council nears completion.
Begun in spring 2009, the project involved the development of new class bases, an impressive new hall and associated changing areas between the schools, with linking corridors enabling the facilities to be accessed by both schools.
To commemorate the coming together of the schools, pupils will bury a time capsule today, at 1pm.
The capsule will contain profiles written by the children describing what they want to be when they grow up, along with newspaper cuttings.
Leicester City Council's cabinet member for children and schools, Councillor Vi Dempster, said: "The new facilities will replace six mobile classrooms and the existing prefabricated dining room. This is in line with the council’s commitment to replace all mobile accommodation used as teaching bases for children in the city with permanent brick-built extensions.
"This project is part of our wider Council Capital Programme, which aims to bring the majority of the city's primary schools into the 21st century, so that we can give our children and young people the best start in education possible."
The building – which includes features such as under-floor heating within its innovative curved roof structure – was designed by Leicester City Architects and developed by Maber Architects for contractor, Mansell.
