A council project aimed at building up to 650 affordable homes on former garage sites and other disposable land will shortly deliver its first new houses.
Three families could be moving into the properties in Comyn Walk, Fishponds, Bristol, in the autumn of 2010 following the completion of work on the site.
The work was carried out under the Garage Strategy, a three-year scheme set up to find alternative uses for 300 plus garage sites, parking bays and other small pieces of land owned by the council’s Neighbourhood directorate.
The Garage Strategy Team is working with four partner housing associations. Cormyn Walk was developed with Sarsen Housing Association. Houses on the site will be managed by Bristol Community Housing Association.
Councillor Anthony Negus, Executive Member for Strategic Housing and Regeneration, said: "With affordable housing in such short supply and with demand so high, our role in helping deliver new homes is vitally important.
"The good news is that the city council is continuing to deliver record numbers of affordable homes, well over 500 in 2008/09 and 2009/10. In addition to providing homes for families this scheme is also finding a solution to the disposal of pieces of land which are expensive to maintain, are in poor conditions and, in many cases, are the target for anti-social behaviour."
