Goldthorpe in Barnsley is an emerging Renaissance Market Town. Funding from Yorkshire Forward and Barnsley Council's Strategic Housing has enabled the further development of the village centre to its next stage. Plans for central Goldthorpe are to go public at a series of exhibitions to be held in the village from Monday, 14 June.
Building on previous consultations with the public and stakeholders during August 2008, consultants Gillespies were appointed by the council's Renaissance Market Town Team to take the masterplan to its next stage. New design proposals are now ready for public viewing.
At the consultations 83% of local people supported the proposals to purchase and demolish properties on Main Street to create a site for a new school in the centre of Goldthorpe. From approximately 108 properties identified for acquisition, to date 59 have been purchased and demolition is due to start in the autumn.
The new plans include a design of the streetscape for Doncaster and Barnsley Road to make it more compact, pedestrian friendly and vibrant. In addition outline designs for a new school and the proposed new residential areas have been developed. Improvements to shop fronts and suggestions for relocation of the market are also included.
Goldthorpe residents are to be asked for their opinions on what the character of the village centre should be by making choices on paving colours, street furniture and planting. Ideas for improving green spaces and linkages within Goldthorpe are included in the masterplan.
