Five students from Stewards School on Parnall Road have taken part in an innovative work experience scheme launched by Kier Harlow to give budding company directors and construction experts of the future a 360-degree view of business life.
The KIP gave the schoolchildren, aged between 14 and 15, a real insight into the working world and included a 'live' recruitment process as they were invited along for an interview - an experience in itself as most of the participants had never been in this type of situation. They were briefed on Kier’s work in the community as well as receiving presentations from a variety of senior management members discussing how they worked their way up to the position they are in now.
Kier Harlow teamed up with the Harlow Education and Employer Partnership (HEEP) for the scheme which is designed to provide local youngsters with an understanding of the opportunities available to them, and in turn, help grow their confidence in interviews and business scenarios.
The school, students and parents all agreed that the scheme had been very beneficial to all involved.
Jacky Hampsted of Stewards School commented: "The students learned life skills rather than just participating. Overall, an excellent opportunity – I wish our students could have the chance to participate every year."
Kier Harlow plans to continue its support of HEEP in providing alternative work related activities in schools in the local area. The KIP scheme is hoped to be repeated next year, plans are to be finalised.
