North Easts First Leisure And Primary Care Centre Opens
Blaydon Leisure & Primary Care Centre, the North East's first purpose built multi-million pound leisure, swimming pool and healthcare facility has opened its doors.
Located on the former site of Blaydon Comprehensive School on Shibdon Road the building has been purpose built to make the most of the spectacular views afforded over Shibdon pond, a conservation area of outstanding natural beauty.
The centre marks the culmination of a successful partnership between Gateshead Council and NHS South of Tyne and Wear offering the people of Blaydon and the wider community access to a host of different but complementary healthcare and leisure services in a convenient community location - an idea suggested by Blaydon ward councillors.
The Gateshead Council-developed leisure centre includes a six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, learner pool, and a large state-of-the-art gym fitted with equipment from the same supplier as that being used at the London 2012 Olympic Games. It also has a multi-purpose studio and additional changing rooms for outdoor sporting activities on the existing athletics track and pitches.
