Kirklees On Course For Low Carbon Future
Kirklees Council has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard after taking action on climate change and reducing its carbon emissions.
Kirklees scored 80% in the rigorous assessment which is necessary to achieve the award. The Carbon Trust Standard is an independent award which recognises real action and results and the assessment process certifies that organisations have measured, managed and reduced their carbon emissions and are committed to reducing them each year.
Kirklees Council Leader Cllr Mehboob Khan said: "I'm delighted that we have achieved the Carbon Trust Standard and our high assessment score demonstrates that we are using best practice to cut our carbon emissions.
"Cutting carbon is a very smart move because by using our resources more efficiently and saving energy, we are helping to tackle climate change and making significant cost savings across our operations at the same time."
He added: "Receiving an excellent assessment score demonstrates that through these projects the council is making significant progress towards its carbon reduction targets. In the first half of 2010 alone the council recorded a saving of approximately £80,000 on energy and fuel bills. The assessment for the Carbon Trust Standard will be carried out every two years to ensure that we are maintaining and improving our efforts."
