Kier North East's multi-million pound school project in Redcar is taking shape after the arrival of the first batch of steel.

The 12 tonnes of steel will form the new kitchen area of Dormanstown Primary School with the uprights being lifted into position by a 40 tonne crane. A further four loads, 115 tonnes in total, will be delivered to the site over the coming weeks.


Cabinet Member for children's services and education, Cllr Ian Jeffrey, said: "This is the latest phase in an exciting project which will ultimately lead to the creation of a first-class learning environment for generations of children to come."

The £4.75 million development is funded by the Primary Capital Programme. Since starting on site in July, Kier North East and subcontractors Groundwork Services and Hescott Engineering have diverted telephones, gas, electricity, water and sewer pipes.

The new school building is due to open in September 2011.
