Green Light For 170 Green Jobs
A new development is set to provide up to 170 new jobs working with green technology.
Manchester City Council's planning and highways committee approved the application, by electronics giant Siemens, on Thursday November 25.
The company will now begin plans to build a 2,679 sq mtr two storey office and laboratory building and car park as part of their site on Princess Road, Withington.
The building will be used to help develop new technology to be used on offshore wind farms as well as providing a major international hub where electrical and electronic devices will be assembled and tested before being sent to offshore sites across north west Europe.
Councillor Nigel Murphy, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for the Environment, said: "This is fantastic news for Manchester and shows that once again, we are at the forefront of innovative green technology. The City Council is committed to working with a wide range of partners, including large companies such as Siemens, to create jobs in the green economy.
"The fact they have chosen Manchester for this major hub is a reflection of the expertise that can be found here, as well as demonstrating that the green sector will be an important employer in future years."
Juergen Maier, Managing Director of Siemens in Manchester, said: "The new facility will form part of Siemens International delivery capability.
"We are delighted to be able to grow our business and the number of highly skilled staff in Manchester to support the company's growth in off shore wind capability."
