In the UK, homeowners have for years had problems with fixing ceramic tiles to floors constructed from timber. With the increase in the number of timber frame constructions being produced within the UK, tiling to timber poses a great problem for housing associations, local authorities, house builders, installers and homeowners
than ever before and can result in costly re-builds at a later stage.
British Standards (BS 5385-3:2007) state that timber floors are not ideal bases for floor tiling and that a sub floor in the form of a minimum 15mm plywood should be used. This however results in access issues, resulting in an incline/step into the bathroom creating a potential hazard for the elderly and disabled.
The solution was the creation of N&C Nicobond Plastic Ply, an ultra thin (2mm), self adhesive timber reinforcing sheet. This can be laid directly onto the existing timber floor and immediately tiled onto. The standard bathroom can be ready for tiling within 20 minutes saving hours on the standard installation time. At 2mm thick, ceramic and natural stone can be installed without the need to cut doors or create steps.
N&C Nicobond Plastic Ply, in its two years since its launch has revolutionised the ceramic tile industry allowing a massive increase in the number of tile installations and creating an increased market potential for ceramic tiles. In the last two years, this has been used by hundreds of tiling contractors as well as major, UK house builders such as Redrow Homes, Bellway, Persimmon, Charles Church, Gladedale, Bett Homes and Taylor Wimpey. It has been tested and approved by BEAL (Building Element Assessment Laboratory) giving industry wide recognition of the product and its benefits.
