Plans Submitted For Northampton Railway Station Development

Network Rail has submitted plans to Northampton Borough Council for a major redevelopment of Northampton railway station.

It is working in partnership with West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) to develop a modern gateway to the town, providing enhanced capacity and better facilities. The project falls within Network Rail's permitted development rights and it has applied for prior approval of the design and positioning of the scheme. The planned development includes a new station building, a multi-storey car park, new footbridge and platform canopies, together with revised highway access. Later phases of the scheme, which will be subject to a separate planning application in future, include a 20,000 m² commercial development on land surrounding the station.

Strategically located at the centre of England, Northampton is one of the fastest growing parts of the UK in terms of new jobs and homes. It is one of the UK's top 10 cities for private sector employment growth and the county’s population is growing at over twice the national average. However, studies show that Northampton Station is already at capacity during peak hours, while the station building and its associated facilities require investment.

Redevelopment of the station and the associated commercial development would support the creation of over 800 new jobs and will support long term economic growth in Northampton and the wider region. WNDC is currently exploring funding options for the delivery of the station from both the public and private sector.

Chris Garden, WNDC Director of Regeneration said: "The station development is required to improve capacity and facilities while providing a more inspiring gateway to Northampton. As part of a wider regeneration plan, it will sustain the growth of a key local economy in the centre of England. Although it is a complex and long-term project, we're making strong progress and are pleased to have commenced the formal planning process."
