Hetton's Extra Care Scheme Opened

Sunderland's newest extra care housing scheme for older people has officially opened – with high praise from one of its first residents.

Isaac Storey, 93, received a plaque on behalf of residents at Bramble Hollow in Hetton-le-Hole as the £7.1m Housing 21 development was formally launched.

The scheme, which was opened by Councillor Mel Speding, received £1.2m in funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

With 48 purpose-built apartments for over-55s plus on-site care and support services, it also features a restaurant, shop, hairdressing salon, activity room and treatment room.

Born in the Traveller's Rest pub in nearby Easington Lane, Isaac was a colliery training instructor and captain of the first aid team, going on to become an Officer Brother with St Johns Ambulance and even receiving a British Empire Medal for his work.

Isaac always said that he would like to return to Easington Lane when he. From his second floor apartment, he now has a clear view 'up the Lane' to the old familiar sights. Commenting on his new home, he says: "Moving here was one of the best decisions I've ever made and, trust me, I've made some good ones in my time! It's the peace of mind that’s best."

The two-bedroom apartments for rent or shared ownership have been built to wheelchair mobility standards and benefit from under-floor gas central heating, walk-in showers and fully fitted kitchens.

"A well-designed extra care scheme like Bramble Hollow can provide both privacy and the benefits of a real community, making retirement years much more enjoyable," said Michelle Bell, investment and regeneration manager at the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

Mary Bryce, Head of Strategic Area Services for Housing 21, said: "Bramble Hollow is an excellent example of how extra care living can bring huge benefits, both to residents and to the local community. It’s a real alternative to residential care, allowing people to continue enjoying their independence but with help on hand if needed."

Named after the Anglo Saxon term for the area, Bramble Hollow was developed by a partnership of Housing 21, Sunderland City Council, Frank Haslam Milan (FHM) North East and the Homes and Communities Agency. It is the third extra care scheme in Sunderland to be provided through the partnership, following earlier developments in Silksworth and Washington.
