UCATT Describes Redundancy Situation In Hull As 'Chaos'

Construction News Image
Construction union UCATT have described as "chaos" the situation in Hull , after housing maintenance workers were told their jobs were under threat.

Workers at Kingston Works Limited, which undertakes housing maintenance work for Hull Council and is wholly owned by the authority, were told that 79 out of 360 jobs were under threat of redundancy.

Under KWL's proposals, workers could be made redundant in just 30 days. The announcement of job losses came without warning. The situation has been made more complex as in recent weeks 50 workers who had previously worked for the collapsed housing maintenance company Connaught, had been transferred to KWL.

Steve Murphy, UCATT Regional Secretary for Yorkshire, said: "The situation is chaos and workers are in fear of losing their jobs. It is outrageous that UCATT has not been properly consulted in advance about potential job losses. The fact that these redundancies have been announced weeks after the Connaught workers were transferred to KWL, has simply added to the confusion."

A further meeting concerning the redundancies has been scheduled for today where UCATT will be seeking clear answers to the many issues the announcement has raised.
