Young Single People See Housing Choices Limited Further

Construction News Image
The Government's announcement that they are to bring forward the date when the housing benefit shared room rate is extended to people aged up to 35 has been criticised by the body for housing professionals.

The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) is concerned that many single people aged between 25 and 35 who are currently living in their own homes will only be able to claim housing benefit at the level to pay for a single room in a shared house when the change comes in. The age that people will be eligible only for single room rent was due to be extended from 25 to 35 in April 2012, this has now been brought forward to January 2012.

Sarah Webb, CIH Chief Executive, said: "Young single people who rely on housing benefit to support their income are already among some of the most disadvantaged in our society. This move means that they will have to move into shared accommodation even earlier than already announced. Not only is this a backward step for individuals, who will find themselves unable to set up a stable home of their own, but it will also create problems for private sector landlords seeking to let one-bedroom homes.

"It is estimated that around 88,000 individuals will have to move to shared houses, and it is unlikely that suitable and affordable accommodation will be available for all. The alternative will be to make up the difference from their other income, which could lead to greater financial hardship and debt."
