Liverpool-based Total Glass, one of the UK's leading PVC-U and aluminium fabricators, has helped to transform an ageing multi-storey block of flats with the imaginative use of coloured PVC-U windows and feature glazing.
From the outset, Total Glass worked closely with the project architects and main contractor Mitie Engineering on this major refurbishment contract for its long-established social housing client, Liverpool Mutual Homes.
The PVC-U and aluminium window and door fabricator supplied and installed dark grey on white 'A'-rated PVC-U windows in 28 flats at Baden House in Liverpool's Old Swan district. Finished in a RAL 7016 shade, the windows were white inside to maintain a light interior.
Replacing original steel single-glazed windows, the new thermally-efficient and secure frames were inserted into prepared Metsec apertures. These were set into a thermal externally-rendered layer around the entire building to improve its insulation, energy efficiency and sustainability for future generations.
Self-cleaning coated Pilkington glass was also specified for ease of maintenance and window cleaning at the seven-storey building – LMH's only high-rise accommodation, which is located in a popular and busy part of the city.
Coloured glass in red, blue and purple adds further interest to feature wrap-around windows on the corners of the building. Contrasting with the white rendered external finish, the multi-coloured shades reflect the character of the original 1960s styling.
General updating of the building included the addition of new PVC-U French Doors leading onto steel Juliette balconies, which were also supplied and installed by Total Glass.
The project is part of LMH's on-going extensive multi-million pound refurbishment programme throughout the city to bring its social housing stock up to the Decent Homes Standard.
