The first supported housing scheme for vulnerable young families in Newcastle has been officially opened by the Lord Mayor.
Your Homes Newcastle's Jubilee Court, in Gosforth, is providing accommodation for young people and families who are isolated, homeless or in need of support.
Jubilee Court offers tenants a chance to live independently in a supported environment, with opportunities to learn new skills. Courses on offer in Jubilee Court’s communal facility include finance workshops and personal development programmes.
The courses, which are being organised by YHN, are aimed at helping tenants learn the skills that they will require to enable them to live independently. Many of the tenants have been recommended by YHN's Young People’s Service which regularly works with young people who require assistance.
The scheme has received £1.47 million in funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).
"There is a real need for supported housing for young people, and Jubilee Court will make a big difference in people's lives," said Michelle Bell, the HCA's investment and regeneration manager. "With opportunities for personal development and new skills, this scheme will give young families the opportunity to build a foundation for their future."
The £1.9 million development includes 15 two bedroom apartments and four two bedroom houses built around a communal sheltered courtyard. The development also offers communal facilities of a crèche, common room and a training kitchen together with offices for staff who offer support for first time mothers and fathers. All but three of the properties have been filled and families are already settling into their new homes.
The scheme was developed by Frank Haslam Milan (FHM) and designed by Newcastle-based architects, Jane Darbyshire & David Kendall (JDDK) Ltd.
