Sellafield Awards Decommissioning Contract

Sellafield Ltd has awarded four-year Decommissioning Framework Agreements to supply a range of services to support decommissioning to the following:
  • Astrel (Aker Solutions E&C Ltd., Hertel Ltd., Studsvik UK Ltd.)
  • Cumbria Nuclear Solutions Ltd (James Fisher Nuclear Ltd., React Engineering Ltd., Shepley Engineers Ltd., Stobbarts Ltd., WYG Engineering Ltd., along with the international engineering organisation Westinghouse Electric Co UK Ltd.)
  • DEV Nuclear (Doosan Power Systems Ltd., Energy Solutions EU Ltd. and Babcock Nuclear Ltd.)
  • Nuvia Ltd.

The new frameworks will help to enable the acceleration of hazard reduction at the Sellafield Site, which is a fundamental challenge. Effective supply chain engagement to support this mission is crucial. The frameworks offer the opportunity to place a potential £35m/year through individual packages of work.

Sellafield Ltd is leading the way in decommissioning highly radioactive nuclear facilities and has looked far and wide across both the nuclear industry and a huge range of other industries for tried and tested techniques that can be applied to decommission the legacy nuclear plants at Sellafield.

The new framework partners have been chosen to support Sellafield Ltd by providing specialist nuclear engineering solutions to technically challenging projects, many of which have to be carried out in high radiation environments. They have significant resources and have already proved their innovative techniques in some of the most challenging decommissioning projects on the Sellafield site.

Keith Case, Sellafield Ltd's Commercial Director said: "Sellafield Ltd is applying both existing and new innovations to overcome technical decommissioning challenges, whilst at the same time making these work in highly radioactive environments.

"The new partners have beat off stiff competition to secure involvement in these important decommissioning frameworks at Sellafield. Our primary focus, and that of our owners Nuclear Management Partners, is the safe decommissioning and clean-up of the Sellafield site and the decommissioning frameworks will bring a good complement of skills and expertise to meet our goal of tackling the high hazard projects at Sellafield safely, with care for the environment and whilst ensuring best value for the taxpayer.

"The previous decommissioning frameworks were in place for 4 years and provided a sound basis for delivering a number of key hazard reduction projects. Sellafield Ltd has taken the opportunity to review the learning from our experience to identify opportunities for improvement and build this into the revised arrangements going forward. A corner stone of this approach will the development of appropriate partnering behaviours demonstrated by early and genuine engagement of the supply chain in effectively meeting the challenges we face."
