Affordable housing project, Pimlico Estate on Peabody Avenue, has won two prestigious industry awards, a Housing Design Award and a New London Award.
Built by Mansell Construction Services and designed by architects Haworth Tompkins, the 55-unit mixed residential £10.1 million scheme saw bomb-damaged and derelict parts of the estate revived with new housing (38 new homes for rent; 18 for shared ownership). The project comprises a mixture of facilities including a new community hall, improved play and garden spaces for older and younger children and offices for the tenants’ association. Substantial re-landscaping of the whole estate has ensured a bright and homely environment for residents.
The New London Awards celebrate the best schemes in the capital both built and on the drawing board – giving recognition to the impact projects have on their surroundings and their contribution to London as well as to their architectural quality.
The Housing Design Awards praise the finest housing schemes taking into account a number of considerations including relationship to surroundings and neighbourhood, sustainability in construction and attention to safety, security and accessibility. The awards are promoted by Communities and Local Government, National House Building Council, Royal Institutes of British Architecture, the Royal Town Planning Institute, Homes and Communities Agency, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Home Builders Federation.
Mansell's Construction Director, Kevin Atkinson, said: "We are thrilled that Pimlico Estate has been recognised by these awards. We are proud to have been a part of this project which has greatly improved the housing and facilities available to residents."
