Hull Housing Development Takes Flight

A new housing development, named after one of Hull's most famous residents, has taken off with the official opening of the Hawthornes @ Amy Johnson show home and sales centre.

Built by developer Keepmoat Homes in partnership with Hull City Council, Places for People and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the construction of 148 new homes, comprising two, three and four bedroom houses, bungalows and apartments, with 31 available for rent through Places for People, is the first phase of what will eventually be a 600 home development.

Built on the site of the former Amy Johnson School, the pioneering English aviatrix is honoured at the site; a world map proudly displaying the route of Amy’s 10,000 mile solo flight from London to Darwin hangs in the sales office, whilst each of the house types available is named after a place she visited on the epic voyage.

Guests attended the site in the west of the city to join Lord Mayor of Hull, Councillor Colin Inglis, as he cut the ribbon to officially mark the new development’s launch and explored the Jhansi show home.

Named after the Indian city, the Jhansi is a three bedroom home, perfect for first time buyers and young families. Finished throughout in tones of cream, purple and silver, the property features a living room and open plan kitchen/diner downstairs, with two double bedrooms, a single room which can also be used as an office, and a fitted family bathroom upstairs.

Councillor Inglis was impressed by what he saw at the site. He said: "There has been a need for new, high quality, affordable housing in this part of Hull for some time, so it’s great to see houses being built on this site. The quality of the homes beggars belief – they will really transform the area."

David Ward, Managing Director for Keepmoat Homes Yorkshire, added: "We have had very positive feedback from everyone involved in the project and the opening represents a lot of hard work from all of the partners. There is more hard work ahead of us but we’re delighted to be involved in affecting change in the west of Hull."

The HCA has invested £2.3 million in delivering the 31 homes at the development for rental.
