A leading galvanizing firm has played a major part in the ongoing construction of a £30 million leisure centre in Dundee.
Glasgow-based Scottish Galvanizers, part of the Wedge Group Galvanizing, has carried out the mammoth task of galvanizing all the steel structures that will be used to create the new sports hub at East Marketgait, which will replace the current Olympia Leisure Centre.
Ayrshire structural steelwork specialist J&D Pierce Contracts Ltd is using approximately 1,400 tonnes of steel galvanized by the ‘hot dip’ process to carry out initial construction work at the new development, which, on completion, will boast an Olympic-sized 50 metre swimming pool, a 500-vehicle multi-storey car park, and a ground-floor retail unit.
Paul Tait, Commercial Manager of Scottish Galvanizers, said: "This was a colossal task – making the new development safe and durable requires the entire steel structure of the leisure centre to be galvanized, ensuring that the facility is offered a long-lasting protection against rust and corrosion."
Derek Pierce, Joint Managing Director of J&D Pierce Contracts Ltd, commented: "We are delighted to be involved in this project, as the proposed redevelopment plans, with the new leisure centre at their forefront, will really shine a spotlight onto Dundee and attract visitors from across the region."
The new leisure centre is a major feature of Dundee City Council’s ambitious multi-million pound redevelopment of the city’s waterfront area. With the basic steel structure of the new centre now galvanized and starting to be put in place, the council is aiming to have the project completed well in advance of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, they offer a truly national galvanizing service.
