Basements Are Ideal Candidates For Space
Homeowners are choosing to look up rather than down! Loft conversions are a popular choice for many but many people fail to look at basement conversions. Unfortunately not all parts of your house are efficiently used; this is the case with basements within properties.
When spaces such as your basements are not properly utilised then they will start to degrade. Basements can in fact be transformed into bright, breathable and livable spaces.
Rather than choosing a loft conversion one of the best places you can convert is the basement. Do not just use your basement as a damp place to dump all your old stuff. This will only accumulate and become that out of control it will become almost like a breeding ground for dust and various microorganisms.
Basement Living present two options to the homeowner, firstly having a basement which is a breeding ground for microorganisms and acts as a health hazard to your family. Secondly you could have a basement converted into a damp free living space.
If you already have a basement in place then Basement Living can ensure this is suitable and has the correct head height requirement. If there isn’t a basement in place then Basement Living can actually create one for you through basement excavation.
You should as a homeowner think about what the basement is going to be used for when it is complete. This should be thought about as this can affect the design of the basement and items such as the positioning of lights, electric sockets and even any partitioning walls.
Basement finishing is perhaps the most pleasing part of any basement conversion project. Seeing the transformation from a dark and damp basement into a usable, damp free space because waterproof membranes have been applied to the walls and thus no moisture can come through.
In addition to the damp proof membranes which are applied to the walls a sump, pump and alarm system should be implemented for additional piece of mind. These work by if there is any ingress of water then they work together to collect, transport and then diffuse this water to a safe place.
If moisture levels reach a dangerous level the alarm is activated, this notifies the relevant people so that it can be dealt with quickly and effectively before basement flooding occurs.
All basement waterproofing as part of a basement conversion should work in line with BS 8102:2009 for waterproofing of structures below ground. If a basement contractor who carries out work doesn’t work in accordance to this British Standard then your basement will not come with insurance backed guarantee should anything bad occur.
