Plans For Housing To Appear Before Plymouth Council
Ambitious plan for the future of housing in the city goes before Plymouth City Council’s Cabinet on 13 December 2011.
The consultation draft Housing Plan 2012 to 2017 sets out how partners in the city can work towards the vision for Plymouth to be one of Europe's finest, most vibrant waterfront cities where an outstanding quality of life is enjoyed by everyone.
The plan explains the priorities for the next five years for developing, improving and investing in people’s homes, neighbourhoods and communities. It is a response to the challenges the city is facing including the need for more affordable homes to buy and rent, the need to improve private sector housing, to tackle fuel poverty and to enable the older population to maintain independent living for longer.
The new plan is needed so the Council can decide how it can meet statutory housing duties and respond to the changes in national policy and in the wider economic climate.
The previous Housing Strategy for 2008 to 2011 achievements included the delivery of record numbers of new affordable homes, bringing £100 million of investment to the city, tackling regeneration, improving access to private rented accommodation with the HouseLet and EasyLet schemes, a new purpose built homeless hostel, the development of new refuge, helping more older and vulnerable people live independently in adapted homes and installing 4600 energy efficiency measures to vulnerable households.
Councillor Ted Fry, Cabinet Member for Strategic Housing, Planning and Economic Development said: "Plymouth faces significant housing issues but along with our partners we can be ambitious and rise to the challenges. The Housing Plan is about ensuring the city has good quality housing in thriving communities and we are setting out clear delivery plans to meet our targets."
"The plan needs the commitment of public, private and voluntary agencies and the Council will champion and challenge everyone to deliver the changes we need."
