Respite Centre Extension Officially Opens

Councillor Grant Monahan has officially opened the extension to Plymouth City Council's Colwill Lodge in Estover.

The five modern apartments provide high quality short respite breaks for adults with learning disabilities who may also require special care.

Councillor Grant Monahan, Cabinet Member for Adult Health and Social Care said: "I am thoroughly impressed with these apartments. We are able to offer people a lovely place to stay for a break that can be tailored to what they want. They are modern and comfortable but also high tech and use infrared systems and specialist lifting equipment to meet the different needs of people who stay here."

A number of people have already stayed in the apartments and given them glowing reports. The apartments are wheelchair accessible and have open lounge areas and kitchens with windows that go to the floor to allow views of the garden. There are ensuite bathrooms and two of the apartments have specialist lifting systems. There are also communal areas where people can socialise.

The extension takes the number of beds at the Lodge up to 15. The work was paid for by Council capital funding and the Council secured grant funding of £250,000 from the SW Regional Efficiency and Improvement Programme.
