A galvanizing company has been called upon to lend a helping hand to build a new fire station that will also double up as a valuable community facility.
Eastleigh-based Wessex Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, was called upon to provide its hot dip galvanizing treatment to approximately ten tonnes of steel used to construct the £8.5 million Weymouth Fire Station and Community Safety Centre in Dorset.
The metalwork was supplied by Blandford Forum-based fabrication firm ACL Structures Ltd for the initial structural work at the new hub, which is located on Radipole Lane and replaces Dorset Fire and Rescue Service’s previous base in the town at North Quay.
The new complex, which was originally planned more than five years ago, combines a state-of-the art fire station and training centre for the local fire-fighters, with adjoining community facilities including an IT suite, meeting rooms, a cafeteria, and a multi-purpose hall. It is also home to ‘Firewise’, an interactive walk-through house, which is being used by the fire service to educate local residents by showing them the devastating impact fire can have. Visitors are able to view a demonstration from behind fully fire-safe glass, and watch as the fire takes hold in the ‘house’.
"This new centre really does combine the best of both worlds," Richard Whiddett, Commercial Manager of Wessex Galvanizers, commented. "Not only does the fire brigade get to use the most modern, up-to-date facilities and equipment, but it will also act as a crucial hub for local residents and help to promote fire safety throughout the community."
"Having the steelwork galvanized by the team at Wessex Galvanizers will ensure it is protected long-term against rust and corrosion," Bob Evans, Managing Director of ACL Structures Ltd, revealed. "It’s great to have been involved in such a worthwhile project, with the new centre already proving to be a popular addition with not just the fire-fighters, but local residents too."
The Weymouth Fire Station and Community Safety Centre was officially opened by double Olympic sailing champion Sarah Ayton, who won gold medals at both the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing games.
Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, they offer a truly national galvanizing service.
