Work is under way on a new housing scheme in Surrey that is blazing a trail in its approach to energy efficiency.
Crest Nicholson and Galliford Try (Linden Homes) have started building 452 homes on the West Park site, one of three development areas that make up the Epsom Cluster. The approach to the design of the new homes at West Park has focused on sustainability and innovative techniques have been employed to ensure carbon emissions are kept to a minimum throughout the lifetime of the scheme.
The use of the Fabric Energy Efficient Standard (FEES) specification for 250 of the new-build homes will mean a vast improvement in insulation to lock in carbon savings during the life of the buildings, rather than just relying on external renewable energy sources. Crest Nicholson is also building five AIMC4 units to cost effectively deliver the Energy standards of the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 with a fabric-first solution.
Ken Glendinning, Head of Area for Surrey and Sussex at the HCA, said: "I've been very impressed by the commitment to cutting carbon emissions both during construction and in the long-term at West Park. Careful consideration has also been given to the integration of the former hospital buildings within the new development, and residents will also be able to enjoy large areas of green space that will contribute to the creation of a very pleasant, eco-friendly environment."
