One of Costain's project teams has achieved an impressive performance following its latest inspection under the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS).
The three-person team at Oxted Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) in Surrey notched up a score of 37/40 for its efforts to provide a well-run site that was a good neighbour to nearby residents. The team operates as part of 4D, the consortium made up of Veolia Water, Costain and MWH.
Construction Manager Daniel Chilcott, Site Engineer Halil Zorba and General Foreman Dave Wass are responsible for updating the Oxted plant to comply with stricter EU regulations governing the discharge of treated waste into a nearby river.
This includes reducing the phosphate levels in waste by ferric dosing and then dealing with the larger amounts of solids in the water created by the dosing by installing larger sand filters.
The three-person team typically has around a dozen sub-contractors on site at any given time. Work started onsite in October 2011 and is scheduled for completion in November 2012, one month ahead of programme.
The first CCS site inspection gave the team a score of 35.5/40. "We tried to get a feel from the inspector for what we should be looking at,"said Chilcott. "We don't have a lot of money to play with; we’re doing some work on local footpaths and have improved a bridle path at the side of the site.
"We took material from the temporary car park and put that into the footpaths. That allows us to recycle the material and leave a legacy."
