As new statistics reveal the true impact on the physical and mental health of carers, a world leader in the manufacture, installation and innovation of stairlifts is advising carers to invest in the technology.
Carried out by Carers Week - a group of eight charities including Age UK, Carers UK and Macmillan Cancer Support - a survey has found that 87% of 3,400 carers had suffered detrimental mental health, while 83% had suffered physical health problems. Another 36% said they had sustained injuries such as back pain and insomnia while caring for sick or disabled friends or family.
Now, West Yorkshire-based pioneer of stairlifts, Acorn Stairlifts, is urging carers to consider the benefits of a stairlift. Sales Director Jules Allen comments: "A stairlift can provide a safe, reliable and easy-to-use solution which gives peace of mind both to people being cared for and their carers alike. Added modern functionality including remote control and slimline design increases the efficiency and immense value and benefit of these products as a proven alternative to lifting and carrying disabled people."
Carers Week - which runs until Sunday (24 June) is a UK-wide annual awareness campaign to celebrate the UK's carers and recognise the contribution they make to those they care for, and to their communities. During the week the profile of unpaid carers is raised in the national, regional and local media. Organisations throughout the UK are encouraged to take part and join in by organising events, running information sessions and recognising the carers they work with or support.
There are currently more than six million unpaid carers in the UK, and it is estimated that one in six carers either give up work or reduce their hours to look after elderly friends and relatives or younger adults with disabilities.
Formed in 1992, Acorn Stairlifts started by buying, reconditioning and reselling pre-owned stair lifts, as well as buying in new lifts from other UK manufacturers. Over the years the company has grown to become a market leader in the design and manufacture of stairlifts, and still remains at the forefront of stairlift technology.
To demonstrate the benefits of stairlift technology, Acorn Stairlifts has recently launched a free DVD featuring established UK television doctor Dr Hilary Jones.
