Work is about to begin to refurbish Northamptonshire County Council's Kettering Library.
The county council has invested £250,000 to restore the ancient wooden parquet flooring which has been in place since the library was first opened over 100 years ago. The work to the floor will also include the re-opening of the library’s grand entrance on to Sheep Street as well as updating the library lighting.
The funding forms part of the restoration appeal launched by the Kettering Friends of the Library group in March this year which is raising money to help restore the historical building to its former glory.
County council cabinet member for customer services Councillor Heather Smith said: "Kettering Library is one of town’s most eye-catching and historic buildings and is visited by an average of 800 people every day.
"The building is now over 100 years old and needs some attention and I’m pleased we have been able make this £250,000 investment to begin restoring the building.
"Fundraising is continuing for Kettering Library so I’d also like to remind everyone in the local community, individuals and businesses alike - Kettering Library is your library. Please get involved and help restore this building to its former glory."
The library will remain open but there will be limited access while the work is taking place. People with disabilities will be able to access the library via the art gallery during usual opening times.
Stock will also be limited but customers can ask staff for specific items to be ordered or reserved.
Work is set to begin on 16th July.
