A scheme delivered by MGWSP, on behalf of Northamptonshire County Council, Corby Borough Council and the European Regional Development Fund, has been shortlisted in the prestigious National Transport Awards 2012.
The 12th National Transport Awards will shine a spotlight on the successes that have been achieved on local transport projects. These projects have shown the judges the tangible results they've achieved, improving the experience for transport users.
The George Street, Corby project has been shortlisted in the Excellence in Walking & Public Realm category. In addition, Northamptonshire County Council has been shortlisted in the Transport County of the Year Award.
MGWSP completed work on the transformation of George Street in Corby with sub contractor John Henry as part of the wider regeneration of the town. The project was carried out through the North Northants Development Company (NNDC) and was officially completed in June 2011.
The improvements complement the Willow Place shopping centre, new Corby East Midlands International Pool and Corby Cube (civic hub) development, carrying the theme of revitalisation along the length of George Street. The principal aim was to create a pedestrian-friendly environment to make walking along George Street more attractive. It has also provided improved bus and taxi facilities.
Councillor Andre Gonzalez De Savage, county council cabinet member for Protective Services, Transport & Infrastructure, said: "This project has greatly transformed George Street and created a very attractive thoroughfare which links the newly revitalised town centre to the new swimming pool and Corby Cube."
