Former Factory To Be Turned By BAM Into New UTC Royal Borough Of Greenwich

BAM Construction has been selected to turn a disused Siemens factory in South-east London into one of the government's University Technical Colleges.

The contractor will retain a large proportion of the frame and envelope of the former factory in creating modern facilities for this University Technical College to be known as UTC Royal Borough of Greenwich.

BAM will refurbish more than 2700 sq m as well as building 2,600 sq m of new space under the £8.8 million deal.

UTC Royal Borough of Greenwich, which will specialise in engineering and construction, will host 600 pupils aged 14 to 19. Works are due to start in August this year and will open in September 2013.

It will represent one of 24 UTCs announced in last year's Budget. The institutions offer courses designed in partnership with employers, skills sector agencies and universities.

BAM was awarded the contract to deliver Hackney University Technical College - London’s first ever UTC – late last year.

Regional Design Manager, Mike O'Donohoe said: "It is very pleasing to secure more work on the UTC programme, which is central to the government’s education aspirations.

"This award shows we understand the specific ambitions of the UTC programme and in particular how our designs respond to the specialisms.

"Converting a former factory into a state-of-the-art education facility is a challenging job and we look forward to using our skills and experience to deliver a first class facility for the local community."
