Construction Workers Out Of Pocket - UCATT

Construction union UCATT are calling for 20 construction workers to be recompensed after they were left out of pocket, following the Queen's recent visit to Leeds.

The Queen visited the Leeds Arena on Thursday 19th July. Due to her visit the principal contractor on the project, Bam closed the site on both the 18th and 19th July.

The majority of workers on the site were temporarily transferred to other sites or were paid for the two days when the site was closed.

However UCATT has learned that around 20 workers for one of the main sub-contractors GKRC (GR Kilmartins Construction) who are officially classified as self-employed were not offered other work and received no payment for either of the days the site was closed.

It is understood that the workers lost a £100 per day, due to the Queen's visit.

Rob Morris, Acting Regional Secretary for UCATT Yorkshire, said: "It was an honour for the Queen to visit the site. Therefore it is deeply unfair that a group of workers should lose out financially because of this visit. The company involved should pay the workers the money that they should have received."
