In 2012 Corilla Marine based in Bridgend in South Wales became an Industrial Member of IALA. The Bridgend factory has been producing rotationally moulded parts for over 35 years and prides itself as being one of the most experienced and professional rotational moulders in the world.
In more recent years there has been a new focus at the Bridgend site with the manufacture of Navigation Buoys (Corilla Marine). Whilst the Corilla Marine name maybe a relatively new name in the industry its products are certainly not.
The current Technical team at Corilla is believed to have actually designed the first rotationally moulded navigational buoy back in 1986. This was a 1250mm diameter buoy developed to be compatible with the Northern Lighthouse Boards requirements and used in the Scottish fish farm industry. Once this was proven larger size buoys developed.
In 1995 both a 1500mm and 2000mm diameter split collar buoys were developed. Many of which went into service on the south & west coast of Ireland. The range developed further in the late 1990’s with the addition of 1750mm and 2400mm buoys.
This was followed by the inclusion of a day mark for all the intermediate buoys (1500mm to 2400mm) and a Service Exchange Tower (S.E.T.). This allowed a port or harbour authority to stock spares and change parts if and when necessary, leading to considerably reduced down times.
The World’s first truly 3000mm diameter buoy was produced in 2001 which led on to the now highly successful 3Mtr. Class 2 series. These have been sold all over the world including customers such as the Meteorological Office who located one 260km off the French coast in 1500ft of water. And twenty five of the Class 2 buoys which are currently in the Thames estuary for Trinity House Lighthouse Service.
Corilla are very proud to say one of our 3Mtr. Class 2 Series buoys will be playing an important part in this year’s British Olympics. The UK MET Office has positioned it in Weymouth Bay to collect data for forecasting the weather for the sailing events.
Corilla’s buoys have certainly been put to the test over the years and in some cases against the competition where contracts have been won based on trials of up to 6 month long.
Corilla manufactured what is to be believed the world's largest rotationally moulded navigational buoy for PD Teesport who currently have in the region of 50 of Corilla’s buoys in the water.
Corilla’s lightweight modular, low maintenance buoys are proving to be a popular choice around the World.
