In the midst of a double dip recession, some construction firms are discovering that apprentices offer a competitive edge.
It appears to reflect a wider trend, with UK businesses in a range of sectors reporting improved productivity and a better reputation by delivering apprenticeships. According to research by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills, 72% of businesses say that apprentices have improved their productivity, while 43% say delivering apprenticeships has helped them win new business.
In West Northamptonshire, construction firms are being helped to reap these benefits by a pioneering apprenticeships scheme. Launched in 2009, Construction Futures makes the delivery of training and apprenticeships a legal requirement for developers that receive planning permission. Once the development is on site, Construction Futures works in partnership with the contractor and supplies trainees from local colleges.
Peter Caffry, Construction Futures Manager said: "The contractors we’ve worked with have quickly realised what a positive impact apprentices can make. By working with local colleges, we ensure that apprentices are suitably skilled, enthusiastic and ready for work on site. Crucially, the costs of employing an apprentice can often be recouped through industry and government grants. Firms that deliver apprenticeships are making a vital investment in the future of their business."
David Wilson Homes is one of the latest companies to work with Construction Futures. It has secured apprenticeships with three of its subcontractors at the Pineham Lock development in Northampton.
Mark Penn, Construction Director at David Wilson Home South Midlands said: "We're delighted to support the Construction Futures programme. Apprenticeships are the lifeblood of our industry, ensuring construction skills for the future and we are committed to providing as many opportunities as we can. I myself started as an apprentice carpenter and worked my way through the ranks of site management. The journey gave me a great experience, together with access to extra qualifications."
